Movement & Nature-Based Therapy
Movement & Nature-Based Therapy
Sometimes healing happens best in motion.
Movement & Nature-Based Therapy combines traditional psychotherapy with movement, outdoor environments, and experiential activities to support healing from stress, trauma, anxiety, depression, and other life challenges. Rather than remaining in an office for the entire session, therapy may take place while walking, hiking, or engaging with the natural environment in a way that feels safe and supportive.
All sessions are provided by a licensed or license-eligible professional counselor or social worker using trauma-informed approaches tailored to each client’s needs.
What is Movement & Nature-Based Therapy?
Movement and nature-based therapy intentionally incorporates movement of the body and natural environments into the therapeutic process. For many people, moving outdoors can make it easier to regulate the nervous system, process emotions, and engage more naturally in therapy.
Depending on your goals and comfort level, sessions may include walking, mindfulness, sensory grounding, reflective conversation, or creative activities using natural elements. Every session is individualized, and participation is always at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduced stress and physiological arousal through gentle movement
- Increased relaxation and openness in outdoor settings
- Less pressure from direct eye contact
- Walking rhythm that supports emotional processing
- Improved mood and cognitive flexibility through physical activity
Nature-Based Therapy
Nature-based therapy intentionally uses the natural environment as part of the healing process. Time spent outdoors can support nervous system regulation, mindfulness, and emotional awareness while providing opportunities for reflection, restoration, and personal growth.
Sessions may incorporate:
- Mindfulness and breathing practices in nature
- Grounding through sensory awareness
- Guided reflection while walking or hiking
- Pace and movement regulation
- Creative expression using natural elements
- Journaling and reflective observation
- Seasonal or nature-based mindfulness activities
Our Trauma-Informed Approach
Movement and Nature-Based Therapy focuses on creating safety while helping clients reconnect with themselves, their bodies, and the world around them.
Areas of emphasis include:
- Enhanced nervous system regulation
- Emotional and sensory awareness
- Rebuilding safety and embodiment
- Reducing chronic stress activation
- Fostering connection, resilience, and meaning
Rather than simply talking about experiences, clients are invited to engage in experiential activities that support healing through movement, reflection, and connection with the natural environment.
Who Can Benefit?
Movement and Nature-Based Therapy may be especially helpful for individuals who:
- Feel anxious or confined in traditional office settings
- Have difficulty connecting through traditional talk therapy alone
- Experience restlessness, agitation, or emotional shutdown
- Find movement helps them think, process emotions, or feel more regulated
- Enjoy spending time outdoors and want to incorporate nature into their healing journey
